Scrambling & Mountaineering

Master the essential techniques for confidently tackling rocky ridges and alpine terrain

Scrambling is where hillwalking evolves into something far more engaging – steeper terrain, hands-on movement, and real decision-making in the mountains. Our Scrambling & Mountaineering courses are designed to bridge that gap, giving you the confidence and technical understanding to move efficiently and safely over rocky ground. Whether you’re stepping onto Grade 1 ridges for the first time or looking to refine ropework and movement skills, we focus on practical, real-mountain learning that translates directly to your own adventures.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Absolutely! This course is designed for beginners to winter mountaineering. We start with the basics and build from there. No previous winter experience is required.

We can reschedule at no extra cost if conditions are unsafe. Winter mountaineering is weather-dependent, and we’ll always prioritise your safety. Flexibility is built into all our courses.

You need to be comfortable walking in the mountains for a full day carrying a rucksack. Standard hill-walking fitness is sufficient. If you can manage a long day walk, you’ll be fine.

We’ll confirm the exact meeting point after booking based on weather forecasts and conditions. Typically, it’s a car park near the chosen mountain area (Cairngorms, Glencoe, Lake District, or Snowdonia).

It’s better to arrange hire in advance. We’ll send you details of recommended hire shops when you book so you have everything ready.

Day 1 covers all the essential skills (ice axe, crampons, navigation, avalanche awareness). Day 2+ we put these into practice with a summit attempt or more challenging terrain, depending on your progress and conditions.

No, but we can recommend options for various budgets in the Cairngorms, Glencoe, Lake District or Snowdonia.

Maximum 6 people to one Winter Mountain Leader, ensuring everyone gets proper attention and quality coaching.
